Saw Stossel the other night talking about debt and throwing more money out there. He referred to Canada when back in the 80's they were drowning in debt and began to cut social programs and everything in between including taxes and how today they are running surpluses . Even during the dark times of 2008 and on up they were running surplus and had no stimulus programs. Cut food stamps and welfare and all levels of government and things did not all apart but got better. No money is not the answer. I may be wrong here but I think a few years ago I saw where the local school Superintendent had two secretaries . WHY TWO ??

well said Hat I have 2 brothers that are high school coaches, my sis-in-law is a teacher, my nieces are teachers, my wife is in adm, I spent 15 years on school board.....I support public schools to the max, but I favor funding need and not want. Your example of 2 secretaries is a good example of want.

For national level offices, I prefer to vote Libertarian when possible, but tea bag philosophy at the local level doesn't work because local level roles of government are inherently pure (fire, police, roads, bridges, water, sewer, education, etc).

local levels of government are more liberal ,they want to control and place codes and laws that control you and your property ,they may say they are conservative but look at their actions ,not their words

Your example of 2 secretaries is a good example of want. I can't answer why a supt would need 2 secretaries that make around $25K a year, but I can tell you why we have "academic coaches" and "curriculum directors" who make upwards of $75K a year for every subject field at every level; testing, which we spend exponentionaly more on than any other state. And the politicians that are the quickest to take money from us, are the also the ones who set these testing mandates AND are sitting on the boards of charter schools, private schools, and are stockholders in Pearson who we pay to handle all the testing in Texas(which we do more of than any other state in the union). Basically, Texas politicians have discovered how much money can be made from education and it has now become one big money laundering scheme.

local levels of government are more liberal ,they want to control and place codes and laws that control you and your property ,they may say they are conservative but look at their actions ,not their words No doubt - there are tons of examples of local government getting into chit they shouldn't worry about (exceeding their infrastructure/public safety roles). The biggest difference between local and state/national is that the local government, in addition to performing critical roles, is also the most accessible and responsive. We've all seen school board and council elections swing on a current event/issue. In theory, if something passes that shouldn't, vote them out. As we're seeing, on the national level, that's damn near impossible. One thing the tea party has revealed to anybody paying attention is that the republican party is full of dems.

Local governments pass those mandates to generate more revenue....revenue that has been cut from federal budgets. It's a nasty cycle.
